Social media in Latin America

Mexico is on top. and brazil?

On one hand, where LatAm represents the single-largest market for Fb (with 81 million users), Mexico is the region’s leading country in terms of user base. Globally, Mexico stands out as the seventh-largest country housing the Fb community, ahead of European names like Germany, Italy and Spain. Having said thus, for marketers though, there is another nation more important – Brazil, which accounts for 38% of web users and is the most populous nation in LatAm (196 million). In Brazil, 80% of web users are on Orkut, while only 4.9% prefer Fb. [Samba and Orkut: now you know the real link!]

Age and gender groups

Latin America is also the country of young hearts. Digest this: 93% of the Internet users in the age group of 55 and more are also social web users. Having said thus, however, it is the 15-24 year-olds group which forms the largest community on social web (33.1% of total unique visitor count and 48.0% of total minutes spend on social sites). In terms of gender-differences, while males account for 50.9% of user base, it is the females who display greater engagement on social sites, with a 53.6% share of total time spent by both groups.
