HIGH COURT RIPS APART UGC IN IIPM CASE

In a complete snub to the UGC, the High Court today passed an interim judgment against the UGC. The High Court stated that IIPM was authorized to give MBA and BBA degrees from IMI and that UGC had no business stopping IIPM from advertising about the same. Brushing aside all UGC arguments, the High Court contended that as, according to IIPM, its courses were world-class and students comprised intellectuals, UGC should not have an objective of stymieing the growth of private, entrepreneurial education being imparted by institutions that were here for the long term. Rejecting the UGC plea that IIPM be stopped from using the terms MBA/BBA in their advertisements, the High Court judge Rajeev Shakdar stated that not only will IIPM be allowed to continue using MBA/BBA degrees in their advertisements, but also that IIPM should not even write the term that their degrees fall out of the purview of the UGC, as long as it is mentioned in clear and legible terms that the degrees are offered by IMI, Belgium. The judge commented to the UGC and HRD Ministry counsels that it takes a considerable amount of investment and effort to set up such institutions like IIPM and it should not be UGC's motive to curtail the operations of such institutions. After the IIPM counsel argued about the world-class credibility of IIPM where faculties from top universities like Harvard, Oxford, MIT etc have also taught and about IIPM's 35 years of existence, in its judgment, the High Court further ordered the UGC to immediately remove the name of IIPM from the list of fake universities, as IIPM is neither a university, nor had ever claimed to be one.
