Glorious Marketing Moments 2008
From iconic slogans to new emotions; and from Fear Factor to new positioning nectar, 2008 saw marketers try every trick to ensnare more consumers. Surbhi Chawla and Savreen Gadhoke do a dekko on the most scintillating moments of the year...

Hey! I’m... umm…

Now this is what we call ‘total paisa vasool.’ Once the honchos at Tata Sky roped in Aamir as their brand ambassador, they couldn’t have used him more effectively. Here was the serious Aamir playing the double role of a Punjabi miyan-biwi and that too every few seconds in your living rooms. With Aamir in a double whammy, the ad had been quite successful in grabbing eyeballs as it hit the nail on the head by showcasing a typical Indian family’s arguments about their purchase decisions, thereby targeting the middle class segment. In a year that saw Aamir ‘Mr. Choosy’ Khan suddenly pick up as many endorsement contracts that he could, the Tata Sky storyboard really caught imaginations. They don’t call him the “perfectionist” for nothin’!

Don’t vote for…

If Barack Obama can easily be called the world’s first Internet President, the November Assembly elections gave us a glimpse of what political marketing in India could be like in times to come. In the wake of the Mumbai terror attacks, voters gave a thumbs down to political bickering. When both national parties, the Congress & Bhartiya Janta Party lost count of their own political agenda and just focused on counting the follies of the other, the middle class stood up and voiced its opinion for the first time. The experience may well pave the way for some interesting political marketing techniques, even as General Elections 2009 draw closer. Be prepared for more action and more aggression as Behenji enters the fray. Watch out for Mayawati!
